A Young Man and the Sea

A Summer of High Seas Adventure Aboard the tall ship EUROPA

About Matt

 Matt Maples1

In the spring of 2007, Matthew Maples began his sailing adventures as an  intern with the American Sail Training Association on the barque Picton Castle. His life has not been the same since. Since then, he has sailed on the twin brigantines Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson, the brig Niagara, and the schooner Spirit of Massachusetts. Now he sails again representing ASTA on the bark Europa to document life on board this unique vessel during the Great Lakes United TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® .

Matthew graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 2007. He is a native of land-locked Bartlett, IL. His internship opportunity with ASTA infected him with a sailing “bug” that to this day persists in ailing him with a chronic-yet-delightful wanderlust over water.

Hi Matt, how you doing? Your dad sent me some links so I can catch your blogs and track your ship. He’s looking forward to going out east to visit with you and see your ship. Congratulations big guy, you got one good job! Glad I got to see you when I was over to your house. Have fun and be well.

    Love, Uncle Frank

Hi Matt! Just found your blog while perusing the ASTA site. When you get the chance, check out PrincessofPirates.wordpress.com. It’s a new tall ship sailing blog I’m starting geared toward young women. It’s pretty minimal at this point, but I’d love to know what you think.
